It has been announced that the project will comprise four theatrical releases, each covering one act of the larger story. The first release is slated for release on September 15th, 2012. These theater-exclusive showings will be followed by Blu-ray and DVD releases in 2013. The project was born out of negotiations between Khara president Hideaki Anno and Platinum producer Toshimichi Otsuki to continue the Evangelion television anime after its conclusion with a theatrical film series—hence the subtitle "Rebuild of Evangelion." The two also collaborated on The End of Evangelion movie that served as a finale for Eva TV series in 1996/1997. In his Newtype interview, Anno revealed that the first two acts of the new film series would be released as one film, but that subsequent acts would be released as individual films. Some time after these statements were made, Evangelion producer and Khara director Kazuya Tsurumaki stated that "Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0" would feature a completely new story rather than a direct continuation from the TV series' final two episodes. The official website of "Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0" was updated in September 2010 with new information on the project under its Japanese title of . In the new trailer, Hideaki Anno is seen saying, "The next film will be able to touch upon the mystery of NERV and the mysteries behind it." The trailer also featured a new voice actor for Shinji Ikari, Yūsaku Tachibana. In a June 2010 interview with Japanese industry magazine "Animage", Khara producer Toshimichi Otsuki revealed that total production costs for the project were estimated at ¥2 billion. This estimate included animation production costs as well as operational expenditures such as rental fees for Tokyo's Shinjuku district and wages for numerous staff members. In July 2010, Otsuki also announced that "Evangelion 3.0 + 1. 0" would be produced in two formats: a single film, which was to be released in theaters on September 15th, and a trilogy of films which were scheduled for release in January 2012 and June 2013. The second theatrical trailer was uploaded to the official website on December 1st, 2010. The trailer revealed that the story would tell the tale of the "Angel War," and feature new characters played by Maaya Sakamoto (Misato), Tomokazu Seki (Kaworu Nagisa), Yūsaku Tachibana (Shinji Ikari) and Hiroki Gotō (Toji Suzuhara). On August 21, 2010, it was announced that the film's North American distributor had registered the title of the movie in a United States patent office. Khara had previously announced that they were preparing a new "Evangelion" series for theatrical release following the conclusion of the television series. On October 13, 2010, Otsuki announced at a press conference that "Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0" would be released in three parts within a year. In 2011 Otsuki confirmed that Khara had been fast-tracking production on the film so as to release it earlier than planned in 2012 and 2013 in order to meet special interest from global markets who wanted to see English titles with prominent English voice dubbing. cfa1e77820
